Cummin M. Clancy’s Olympic Journey to the American Dream
The history of Clancy & Clancy Insurance starts with Cummin Clancy. He was an officer in the Garda Siochana, Ireland's National Police Force in Dublin, when he represented Ireland in the 1948 Olympics. He threw the Discus. It was there that he met Jumbo Elliot, the Track and Field Coach of the American Olympic Track team and the Villanova University Track team. Jumbo Elliot was considered to be one of the greatest coaches of all time. He offered Cummin a scholarship to Villanova University and that set Cummin on the road to athleticism, business and personal success in America, a country he loved dearly.

The Beginning of Cummin M. Clancy’s Lasting Insurance Legacy
After working with General Motors' insurance management program, Cummin M. Clancy moved to New York, and started working with Travelers as the Cummin M. Clancy Insurance Agency in 1956. Cummin was primarily selling Life Insurance at the time. As he grew his agency; he diversified the insurance products he was selling and in 1971 incorporated a new agency with his wife and partner Maureen. Together, they started Clancy & Clancy Brokerage, Ltd. The agency was located on Seventh Street in Garden City since 1960. In 1984, their daughter Maura left the hotel industry to join the family insurance business and became the President of the agency. Her mother, Maureen Clancy, remained as the Chief Financial Officer. Cummin M. Clancy passed away in 2013 at the age of 90 and left a strong legacy in his agency of professionalism, customer service and commitment to his community.

Maureen E. Clancy, co-founder of Clancy & Clancy Brokerage, Ltd., distinguished herself as a business leader, community advocate and philanthropist. Maureen graduated from Rosemont College in 1953 and was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters at the 2019 Commencement Ceremonies for her trailblazing work in the business, not-for-profit, and community service.
Throughout her career, Maureen served on the Boards of NYCB (a bank with over $5B in assets), NYU Winthrop Hospital, the Garden City Board of Trustees, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, RotaCare, and the Mineola Garden City Rotary Club. Her outstanding contributions have earned her recognition from each of these organizations, as well as accolades from the New York State Assembly and Senate, which named her “Woman of Distinction.” She was also awarded the Nassau County Girl Scouts’ highest honor, the Juliette Low Award, for her exceptional leadership and service to the community.
Maura T. Clancy Joins the Family Business
Maura T. Clancy Carries Forward the Family Legacy Through Industry Leadership and Innovation
Maura T. Clancy, AAI, the eldest of the Clancy children. She graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1977. Maura began her career in hotel sales with Loews Corporation before joining the family insurance business in 1984. Like her father, Cummin M. Clancy, she was deeply committed to the independent insurance agency community and quickly emerged as a respected industry leader.
Throughout her career, Maura broke new ground as the first woman elected President of the Nassau County Independent Insurance Agents Association and later the first woman to serve as President of the New York State Independent Insurance Agents Association (Big "I"). She also served as President of the Travelers National Personal Lines Agents Council, was a member of the Merchants Insurance Agents Council, and contributed her expertise as a board member of the Insurance Federation of New York (IFNY). In addition, she served on the Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation (MVAIC) as the New York State Department of Financial Services' Public Member, further demonstrating her commitment to the insurance industry and the public she served.

In 2023, two longtime Garden City insurance agencies joined forces to better serve the community.
